The Miami-based cruise line on Wednesday has made an announcement that same-sex couples can now get legally married on in international waters in the Celebrity Cruises ships.
The move of this ship-line follows a marriage equality law which has passed this summer in Malta. Here most of its vessels of Celebrity are registered.
According to the legalization of Malta of same-sex marriage that happened in the month of July in 66-1 vote by the parliament of the country also means ship’s captains who can now officiate these ceremonies.
Lisa Lutoff-Perlo the president and CEO ship line said, “The Celebrity Cruises has a rich and long history forwarding its support to the LGBT community, and according to me, there could not be more favorable time in the history of the cruise line other than this to support inclusion. This is one for the book of history!”
The Celebrity will start taking the bookings for weddings of same-sex immediately, Bradley Norman, the spokesman of Celebrity said in an email after the announcement was made.
This is not the first move of the cruise line, it has already hosted number of same-sex weddings in U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico, where same sex marriage is considered as legal,” said the managing director of cruise line Barbara Whitehall.
Celebrity provides a range of destination wedding packages and on-board ceremonies for couples who want to get connected while taking a cruise. The cruise line from South Florida and, its ships begin its sail both from Port Miami and Port Everglades on cruises to the Mexico and Caribbean and many other regions.
